Ceramicist and Architect

Sonia Hibbs is a British architect and ceramicist whose work is shaped by architecture, landscape, material and the cultural traditions of Catalonia.

Originally from Sunderland, she studied Architecture at the University of Cambridge and later at the Bartlett School of Architecture in London. Her architectural studies explored mapping, thresholds and the way climate, time and human activity leave traces on materials and places.

Since settling in Catalonia, these ideas have found a new expression through clay. Her work combines wheel-thrown and hand-built forms, moving between functional objects and sculptural pieces inspired by local architecture, folklore and everyday life. Her Monks & Nuns draw on the Cistercian monastery of Santes Creus, while the Devils reference the diables of Catalan fire festivals.

Natural clay surfaces, texture and imperfections are deliberately retained as part of the finished work.

Artist and Designer

Jan Fairey is a British artist and designer working across painting, printmaking and drawing.

His background spans illustration, advertising, architecture, digital design and architectural visualisation. After working in London, he moved to Spain where he later established an architectural practice with Sonia.

Across these different disciplines, drawing and the organisation of form have remained a constant. His current work returns to these fundamentals through painting and printmaking, exploring balance, repetition, positive and negative space, colour and the relationship between geometric and organic forms.

Our Place

The studio is based in Vila-rodona, a small village surrounded by vineyards in the Tarragona region, south of Barcelona.

Its architecture, landscape and strong local traditions provide the setting for the work made at Estudi 07. The textures of old buildings, agricultural landscape, changing light and cultural traditions of Catalonia continually find their way into the ceramics, paintings and prints produced in the studio.

Before establishing Estudi 07, Sonia and Jan worked together in architecture and design.

That shared background continues to influence the studio — in the way objects are constructed, compositions are organised and materials are considered in relation to space.
